~~DISCUSSION~~ It turns out that g77 and other various Fortran compilers have been dropped from the distributions of Ubuntu since 8.04 (Irksome Ibis). Therefore, if you decide to clean up your old installation after upgrading to one of these distributions, they will be erased. They are no longer in the current repositories and must be compiled from source. Alternatively, you can get them from the repositories for old distributions.
